It's the first of the month, so it's time for the big Exquisite Suffering switchover!

The newest episode, available to our $6+ backers on Patreon, is all about Star Fox Adventures. Join in to hear us talk about an underwhelming entry in a series we inexplicably have affection for, while we simultaneously dive into one of the most offputting fandoms in the world.

Meanwhile, last month's episode about Golgo 13 is now available for all who want to hear us be baffled by anime.

Hex Crank Lives!

A while back, I had a short-lived blog about survival horror games called Hex Crank. It languished for a couple of years, and I felt really bad about that. So bad, that I decided to revive it.

You can find Hex Crank at its own dedicated site and even read the new article about Alone in the Dark. Which includes a video, and those will be a regular part of the whole thing going forward. Also, remember all those streams I announced here? You can find those there, too, as part of Hex Crank Live. I'm even covering a really rare game to celebrate: the elusive Rule of Rose.

I'm really proud of this, and I'd love if more people knew about it. So tell your friends, and come get spooked.

Join Us In Austin

Coming up, at the end of July, Gary and I will be coming to the Austin Classic Game fest to do a live show and hang out a booth. We'll have more details in the coming couple of weeks, but I wanted to remind you... It's at this website, and we'd love to see you.

Duckfeed Update: May 20, 2016

We have a wiki!

I'd like to call the following people to the front of the class: Jala Prendes, Chase Greenlee, Jeremy Greer, Allison Baker, Sam Bair, Michael Gibb, Eric C, Eric Plaisance, Noah DeBiase, Devin Viland, Bryan Wade, Alex D'Arata-Newby, Brayton Cameron, and Nick Glauber.

This is the team that worked for months, in secrecy, to create the Duckfeed Wiki. Gary and I have only known about it for a couple of weeks, and quite frankly we're gobsmacked by the amount of effort, planning, and time that went into helping build this staggering monument to the network's idiocy.

There are plenty of pages there already, and the team is looking for more contributors to help build it out further.

"Try This" Launched

The second of our premium shows has launched! "Try This" is a show where Gary and I recommend media to each other, then we talk about it at length. The first episode about Raymond Carver short stories and the album "Jet Plane and Oxbow" by Shearwater is available now to $20+ backers. You can also hear a sample below. It will hit the Duckfeed store in two months time.

The next episode of Adaptation Decay should be a fun one, too. We're covering the Doom movie.

Duckfeed Live Tomorrow

Gary and I are going live to goof around on your questions tomorrow, Saturday May 20th at 4pm EST. You can get find the event here, and leave your questions, queries, and prompts in the Q&A widget on the video player.

Watch Out for Fireballs! Live in Austin

Gary and Kole will be in Austin for the Classic Game Fest from July 30 to 31. We'll have a table set up all weekend, and we're performing a live episode of the show! Keep your eye on the page for the show for further details and dates. We'll include more information in these updates, too.

Adaptation Decay is Live!

A while back, we promised new premium content for our highest tier backers. The first of those shows is now live... "Adaptation Decay", our show about botched video game adaptations, got its first episode about the 2002 Resident Evil movie. Is it insulting and terrible? YUP!

Monster in My Podcast is Funded

Just today, we crossed the $3000 per month milestone goal. This is HUGE for us. We can't thank you enough. We're most excited about this launching our newest show: "Monster in My Podcast". The first episode will go live for the public on Monday, but backers at the Early Release level can get the first week's worth of episodes TODAY! This is a fun show, and we really hope you enjoy it.

Duckfeed Update: April 22, 2016

You're Number 1

Last Sunday, we dropped the Dark Souls III First Impressions episode of Bonfireside Chat. We anticipated a surge in downloads and attention. That's how it worked in the past. What we didn't expect was for that episode to rapidly outpace anything else we've ever published in download numbers and shares. Also, never in a million years did we think that we would (even briefly) sit at the #1 spot in Video Games on iTunes. But it happened, thanks to your kind iTunes reviews/ratings, and your enthusiastic hyping of the show and the network.

Our stint at #1 was brief. Probably only about 16 hours. But it's a huge feather in our cap, and we're looking forward to bringing more folks into the community with this extra visibility.

Dark Souls III and Early Release

Anyone who is impatient for the "proper" start of our Dark Souls III season should turn their attention to our Patreon campaign. Backers at the $3 per month and up level can get episodes of all of our shows early, and Sunday's episode just became available today (Friday). Scroll back in the posts a little bit to see the reminder of how to get ahold of this audio. Thanks to everyone who has taken the plunge so far!

Recent Releases

Upcoming WOFF! Games:

  • Dungeons and Dragons: Shadows Over Mystara / Turtles in Time.
  • Oregon Trail / Typing of the Dead.
  • Fallout: New Vegas.

Upcoming Bonfireside Chat Episodes:

  • The tutorial area and the hub area.
  • The first main area of the game.
  • Eventually location name spoilers will go here. Sorry.

Duckfeed Update: April 15, 2016

New Tiers, New Shows

This is an important day for the network. We've decided to pitch some new shows to you, and add new Milestone Goals to our Patreon campaign. Here's the rundown of the new stuff.

  • $3,000 per month: Monster in My Podcast. Gary and Kole will do a thrice-weekly short form podcast churning through the entirety of the Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Monster Manuals.
  • $3,500 per month: Days of Future Cast. Gary Butterfield and Jeremy Greer will do a loving and comedic takedown of the X-Men and the ridiculous X-Men animated television series from the 90's.
  • $4,000 per month: Radio Free Midworld. Kole and a rotating cast of community members will do a chapter-by-chapter book club of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
  • $4,500 per month: Let's Talk About the Passion. Gary and Kole will do an album-by-album analysis show of the total R.E.M. discography, including notable live performances and soundtracks.
  • $8,000 per month: The Crystal Chronicles. This is a big one! Would you be excited to hear Gary and Kole do a Bonfireside Chat-esque podcast about the entire Final Fantasy series? Then help us get to this goal.
  • $10,000 per month: Living Off of This. This is a rough estimate, but this is the amount of money we'd need to pull in from our Patreon, per month, in order for Gary and Kole to quit their jobs and start podcasting full-time.

That's a lot of new content, but we've been sitting on it for a while. We will be releasing pilots for these new shows intermittently, and some of the shows might be on a slow trickle even if we don't reach the goals right away. Hitting these goals will let us justify doing these shows instead of looking for regular, respectable work. We thank you for your generosity so far, and we're excited for the future.

The Pitch: Uploaded

Now would be a good time to re-subscribe to The Pitch. Also, you should listen to this trailer for The Pitch: Uploaded. Just sayin'.

Abject Suffrage for April

The polls are open for our next episode of Exquisite Suffering. If you're a $6+ Patreon backer, you can foist one of the following games upon us:

  • Coca Cola Kid (Game Gear)
  • Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman
  • Sküljagger: Revolt of the Westicans (SNES)
  • Street Fighter: The Movie (PSX)

Kole guested on Video Games Hot Dog

We here at the network are big fans of the Video Games Hot Dog folks, and I was honored to join them for episode #237: "The Duke Boys". You can catch a short discussion of Dark Souls III before we break to talk about Samarost 3. Thanks again to Zack, Riff, and Kevin for letting my laughy-ass on the show.

Recent Releases:

Upcoming WOFF! Games:

  • Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.
  • Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara / Turtles in Time.
  • Oregon Trail / Typing of the Dead.
  • Fallout: New Vegas.

Upcoming Bonfireside Chats:

  • Dark Souls III First Impressions.
  • The tutorial area, and the hub world.

Duckfeed Update: April 8, 2016

WOFF! Brawler Poll Winners

We had a record turnout of Patreon backers who voted to determine which games we'll cover for the brawler episode of Watch Out for Fireballs!. Our winners were Dungeons and Dragons: Shadows Over Mystara and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time. We've already planned our next poll, which will happen sometime in the early summer. Thanks for helping shape our lineup!

Kole Plays Until Dawn

My new let's play series started this week, as I do a blind stream of Until Dawn. It's streaming live, intermittently, on our Twitch channel and being archived at this YouTube playlist. Come watch me be responsible for teens getting hurt real bad!

Retro Game Audio

Gary made a guest appearance on Retro Game Audio to talk about the music of Maniac Mansion. While you're at it, start off your weekend right by just keeping the MM soundtrack on repeat. You could make worse decisions today.

Recent Releases:

  • Check It Out, Comrade! 56: Pony Island / 20XX. This week's a vacation for the Comrades, discussing two short and breezy games about tiny demonic horses and indeterminate years.
  • Bonfireside Chat 88: Shadow Tower Abyss (Part 2). The back half of Shadow Tower Abyss has some of the best and most imaginative imagery of the entire From/Souls catalog. Listen to us visualize it for you.
  • Abject Suffering 135: Duke Nukem Forever. It's tough to cover infamous games for the show. They carry so much baggage that you risk repeating what everyone else has said before. Imagine our surprise, delight, and dismay when we found out that Duke Nukem Forever is vile and boring in new and exciting ways.
  • Teenage Dirtbags: "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi. The Dirtboys settle in to talk about a cyborg teenager with spring arms who sprints through a tunnel to watch a man take nasty rips off of a Bow Bow vape tube.
  • Watch Out for Fireballs! 125: Portal / Portal 2. We jokingly call the foil cover episodes of WOFF! "Perfect Game Episodes". Previous alumni of this club are Earthbound, Castlevania III, and Super Metroid. Our rundown of the Portal series confirms our suspicion: This is about as good as games get.
  • The Level 145: Fiber Wire Bribe. Despite the title, we don't talk about the new Hitman. Instead, we chat up a card/board game hybrid called Faeria and ask the community about free-to-play games.

Upcoming WOFF! Games:

  • Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.
  • Dungeons and Dragons: Shadows Over Mystara / Turtles in Time.
  • Oregon Trail / Typing of the Dead.
  • Fallout: New Vegas.

Duckfeed Update: April 1, 2016

No, none of this is an April Fool's joke.

DuckSpring Final Total

Last weekend, a large number of people from our community dedicated their weekend to streaming games to benefit the Transactive Gender Center. All of the donations have rolled in, and I'm excited to announce that DuckSpring raised $1608.44 after fees and currency exchange. This is huge, and I'd like to thank Sporky and all the others for organizing the effort for this great cause.

Patreon Changes (NEW REWARD SHOWS)

We're always looking for new ways to make backing our Patreon worth your while. A little earlier this year, we put out a survey asking about particular rewards, and we're making a change to our upper tier rewards to reflect the data we got back.

After the next batch of note cards and physical show ephemera goes out to $20+ backers, we're discontinuing that reward. So, if you're a backer at that tier and you were just charged, you will still get the appropriate number of notes 'n' stuff in May, as scheduled.

What's replacing this? CONTENT. We're introducing two new bonus shows that our highest-level backers will get access to first. What are these shows?

  • Adaptation Decay: A show where Gary and I examine just how badly it can go when filmmakers, television directors, or authors adapt video games to other media.
  • Try This: Recommending media is such a dicey proposition. Even if you're sure someone will like it, it can feel like an imposition. On each episode of Try This, Gary and Kole will foist a piece of media on each other and then talk about both of them. Films, short stories, comics, short games... It's all fair game.

These will come out on alternate months, so Adaptation Decay, Try This, Adaptation Decay, Try This... and so forth. Episodes will then become available for sale after a period of exclusivity.

We believe this is a trade up... Instead of getting an envelope of stuff every quarter, you're getting a new episode of a bonus show every month. Pretty great, right? The first episode of one of these shows will come out later in April.

WOFFTRAX

It's the start of a new quarter, which means it's time for a new WOFFTRAX. Part 3 covers our sketches from the Earthbound episodes to the Yoshi's Island episode, and it's available for $5+ backers and will remain available until the end of June.

Part 2 is now available on the Duckfeed.tv store for $2.50.

Exquisite Suffering: Glover and Extreme Sports With the Berenstain Bears!

The new Exquisite Sufferings just rolled over today, too.

Backers at the $6+ level will hear Gary and I talk about "Extreme Sports with the Berenstain Bears", a truly awful little game.

Meanwhile, head over to the store to buy our episode about Glover.

Shirt Polls

We want to sell more shirts. In fact, we'd like to put up a new design each month. But it's hard to choose which design to put forward. That's why we decided to take our usual tactic and put out a poll. That's right, check out March's designs and vote on your favorite at our shirts page. The winner will go up on TeeSpring later in March.

Postcards

We just added a new item to the Duckfeed Store: A random four-pack of postcards. We have lots of leftovers from the ones we send out to Patreon backers, and this is a way for you to get a booster pack of designs. Patreon backers: Only older designs (more than 3 months old) will end up in these packs, and the cards won't be signed/personalized.
